The flight time from London is 3 hours. Air Malta is the national carrier operating scheduled flights. Other carriers including British Airways fly to Malta. Usually cheaper then either of these are charter flights, which go from London and most UK regional airports to Malta with prices starting from about £60.00. There are no bargain operator flights to Malta.
There are no direct flights to Gozo. There is a ferry connection between Malta and Gozo which takes approximately 25 minutes between Cirkewwa (Malta) and Mgarr (Gozo), or a helicopter operated by Malta Air Charter, a subsidiary of Air Malta. The flight takes 15 minutes from Malta airport to Xewkija heliport on Gozo and costs Lm 18 (£28.00) single or Lm 27 (£45.50) return.
Those with a permanent resident status get ferry and helicopter tickets at a reduced rate.
Malta and its smaller companion Gozo, are both developing a roaring trade in real estate. Malta has long been popular, especially with the British who represent 60% of the expatriate population there. In the last three years there has been burst of activity in property development. This is largely due to the forward thinking Maltese Government’s policy allowing Maltese Citizens to repatriate their funds from hidden offshore accounts at a miniscule rate of tax (as low as 3%). The total finds from this money came nearly 300 million pounds, much of which has been invested in real estate causing the present modest but noticeable property boom. Prices on Malta have risen by 20-30% in the last three years, and in some swanky new developments by as much as 40%. Prices are good value rather then cheap, and they are related to the area and proximity to the sea; though as everywhere on Malta is a half an hour by car from the coast, being in land is not too much of a sacrifice. On Gozo which is a mere nine and a half miles by four and a half miles, being inland is even less of a deprivation and prices there were traditionally cheaper than on Malta but are catching up fast.
If you are thinking of renovating an old building bear in mind that building standards on Malta are very variable as there is no standard training provided.
