In 2004 Cyprus became a member of the EU, making it even easier to cross borders and reducing the paperwork involved in buying property there. EU nationals are also now allowed to own more than one property, which means that the island is a worthwhile investment proposition, as well as a great place to settle into a new home.
The island is already popular with retirees because of its relaxed lifestyle, year-round sunshine, mild climate and minimal rainfall; the low crime rate also makes Cyprus an attractive place to settle. The relatively low cost of living is an important factor as well. Property prices are rising with the increase in accessibility, but they are still good value for money and there are many varied properties for sale, both new-build and resale.
The third largest island in the Mediterranean, Cyprus is also ideally located to explore North Africa and Asia. The landscape is varied, with miles of golden beaches on the coast and the Troödos Massif mountains inland, surrounded by citrus groves which produce a gorgeous smell both at blossom time and when the fruit are ripe on the trees.
Food plays an important part in Cypriot culture. The most famous dish is mezze, a selection of savoury dishes including houmous, halloumi (a salty cheese)and stuffed vine leaves. Red meat, game and fresh seafood are available all year round in the many tavernas and you can eat al fresco for most of the year. Desserts are made from the famous Cyprus honey, often combined with nuts or fruit. These can be washed down with a glass of sweet commanderia, thought to be the oldest wine in the world.
Cyprus is divided by the border between the Turkish part of the island, in the north, and the Greek Republic of Cyprus in the south. Consequently, Greek and Turkish are the main languages spoken, but English is widely spoken, particularly on the Greek side. The island has a rich history with remnants of Roman, Byzantine, Greek and British culture strewn all over the island.
CLIMATE
Summer in Cyprus is from the middle of May to the middle of October, with the weather getting very hot in July and August. Extremes of temperature are rare, but it does get cooler in October. Even in winter, when there is more chance of rain, there is on average six hours of sunshine a day.
